Sanskriti Phuyal is a 17-year-old 12th grader from Mulpani, Kathmandu. She was recognized as the winner of EmpowHER Juniors leadership academy for young girls, HER TURN Leadership Award 2020, and ‘Outgoing Personality of Akshara School’ in 2018. She has been leading the project “Sports for Equality” in which she has conducted an interschool sports competition for girls.

Her Journey

Sanskriti started her journey in the field of activism when she stepped into the leadership field in 2017 through the program EmpowHER Junior; which is a flagship foundation of Ujyalo Foundation which is an idea incubation leadership program for girls.

Her personal experience while starting her cricket journey motivated her to work on this project- “ Sports for equality.” While she used to go for cricket training in an academy, there used to be no girls. And girls at a younger age are not emphasized to be involved in sports as compared to boys. This is the reason, she wanted to encourage and support the girls from a young age so that they don’t have to go through the same problems in their future. Later, she practiced herself in her school personally with the school coach. This is just a representative example of what every sports enthusiast girl goes through every day in their life.

Since 2017, she has been leading the project “Sports for Equality” in which she has conducted an interschool sports competition for girls. Currently, she is working on her initiative campaign “Sports for Equality” which aims to make girls aged 10-16 involve in sports and support them. It had conducted a sports competition among the 50 participant girls in Kathmandu. The objective of the project is to increase women’s participation in sports. Sports is a space where we learn unity, respect, and leadership. The project has been virtually empowering young girls to be self-dependent and confident through the means of online games, surveys, and sessions.

She believes that leaders are not born but made.

Impact Created

Through her initiation, she has taught young girls about basic rules and playing skills. She has imparted to the community that a young girl can also lead and play and has been able to imprint that leadership has no age and no gender.

Sanskriti Phuyal was selected among the 20 brightest young entrepreneurs, innovators and game changers below the age of 20 in Nepal, for the year 2020.
