In a world where the voices of the people often go unheard, Ghanshyam Biswakarma, a dedicated child rights activist, has emerged as an inspiration for change at such a young age. Recently, he was honored with the prestigious Glocal Teen Hero Nepal 2024 award in recognition of his tireless dedication and advocacy for child and adolescent rights. Despite challenging circumstances, Ghanshyam has been a relentless champion, continuously working to create a better future for every child and adolescent.

Mr. Biswakarma hails from Rukum, a remote district in Nepal. At just 19 years old, he has already established himself as a successful advocate for child rights and the welfare of children and youth. With over eight years of dedication to impactful work, Ghanshyam has emerged as a committed leader, championing child rights, mental health, climate justice, social issues, and the elimination of child marriage. As the president of the National Adolescent Boys Network Nepal, he has represented the voices of young people on various national and international platforms, showcasing his exemplary leadership skills.

Mr. Biswakarma’s journey began at an early age, driven by his desire and passion to see a better world where every child’s rights are valued, heard and protected. And with time his passion and enthusiasm for child rights have grown simultaneously, and today, he is recognized as one of the prominent advocates who has created an ample amount of tangible impact on communities. Through his work, Ghanshyam empowers children, raises awareness and advocates for policymaking which focuses on the well-being of young people.

Over the years, his educational workshops have not only educated them with knowledge but also equipped them with tools which result in boosted confidence and lead to taking an active role for changes in their respective society. Beyond education, Ghanshyam has provided a talent showcase platform for youth to showcase young talent and creativity potential and nurture them within society.  Through these platforms, he has created an environment where children are encouraged to dream big and believe in their unique talents.

In the age of media, he understood the power of media and leveraged that power and utilized radio to reach a diverse and wider audience through his BalChautari program at Sanobheri F.M. in Rukum District as program host, he educates and raises awareness about issues such as child rights abuses, child marriage, mental health and online safety. His programme brings the space where youths can learn, hear and replicate good practices in their communities. He has played an important role during the COVID pandemic ensuring the most essential resource availability with the vulnerable communities. Through his radio program, he has done a remarkable job of raising awareness on safety measure guidelines to protect children and their families, ensuring people mental health support throughout the tough times.

At such a young age, his leadership and collaboration skills have helped him collaborate with various non-governmental organization and government bodies which has led him to a significant advancement in child protection policy. He has participated in review workshops of government plans to eliminate child sexual exploitation where he has contributed to shaping more effective strategies and policies. As a member of the 16th National Plan Advisory, he has raised and ensured that the concerns and needs of children and adolescents are addressed in the policies.

His scope of work spans various domains all aimed at empowering children and adolescents. he has led numerous climate justice campaigns to create a healthier environment for future generations by educating youths about the importance of the environment and played a crucial role in making environmentally conscious individuals. during the recent earthquakes in the Jajarkot and Rukum districts, he has facilitated data collection, field visits, relief distribution and blood donation campaigns. All these efforts have provided immediate support to the affected communities proving his socializing skills. His impactful work is not limited to Nepal, also he has represented Nepal on various international platforms. He has amplified the voice of Nepali children on an international stage as an organizer and program moderator at the World Social Forum 2024, where he engaged with global leaders and various stakeholders to bring an international perspective on local issues and foster global solidarity. Similarly, his ability to lead, collaborate, network and communicate with various stakeholders helps him do impactful work towards communities and has inspired countless young individuals proving age is just a number which can’t stop him from doing impactful work.

Mr. Biswakarma’s journey is long to go. As he continues to advocate for child rights, climate justice, and mental health, his vision remains the same; a better world where every child’s rights are valued, heard and protected. He wants to create a world where every child is free from exploitation, empowered to speak and able to grow in a safe and supportive environment.

His recognition as a Glocal Teen Hero Nepal 2024, is a testament to his tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to creating a better safer and sustainable society for all children.
